Rolex has just posted some amazing pictures of their Rolex GMT Master II on their official Instagram page, and we have rounded up the ten best! The Rolex GMT-Master II wristwatch was originally designed in collaboration with Pan American Airways and issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul flights. (“GMT” in the name stands for Greenwich Mean Time now known as Coordinated Universal Time). The original GMT Master watch has a 24-hour display fourth hand complication directly linked to and displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel set to the correct offset a second time zone could be read. GMT or UTC is the time zone that is required for all aviation planning, weather forecasts, schedules and other paperwork.
This is an early Rolex GMT-Master wrist chronometer from the 1950s. Its red and blue, 24-hour graduated rotatable bezel, which marked daytime from night-time hours of a second time zone, was made of Plexiglas and painted underneath. As intercontinental travel developed in the 1950s, airliners began to fly swiftly across several successive time zones. For the first time it became important to know the time in various places in the world, simultaneously. It was the dawn of the jet age, and Rolex responded with a watch to match the spirit of the times. #Rolex #GMTMaster #TBT
In function as well as in name, the Rolex GMT-Master II evokes intercontinental travel. It was designed in 1955 to allow airline pilots to read the time in two different time zones simultaneously, thanks to its rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel and additional 24-hour hand. #Rolex #GMTMasterII #101031
The manufacturing of the GMT-Master II’s red and blue Cerachrom bezel insert involved years of research and development. Its composition integrates rare earth material to obtain the red colour and a complex chemical compound to turn its other half into blue. The final result comes after the component is heat-treated for many days at temperatures as high as 1,600 C°. #Rolex #GMTMasterII
On the courts of the Australian Open Tennis Championships, white lines clearly delimit the playing field. A similar sharp distinction is found between the blue and black sections of the Cerachrom bezel insert of the Rolex GMT-Master II in 904L steel, representing daytime and night-time. #Rolex #GMTMasterII #101031 For more details about this watch see the link in the profile.
